Michael T. Rea loves wood.

Thanks to Don’t Panic, I was able to see the incredible work by artist Michael T. Rea who creates ridiculous works of art out of wood. And by ridiculous, I mean he makes things out of wood, that I couldn’t make if I had instructions, an Ikea multi-tool, and 5 workers fresh from the Home Depot lot.

Enough babble. Hit the jump for some of his work. Catch the interview with the manimal over on Don’t Panic’s blog

Emperor Mao’s Kitchen in Venice: Chinese with a side of Propaganda

April 29th, 2009 Posted in Random Musings | No Comments »

maos_header

So I was in Venice Beach yesterday and was looking for a place to get some food at. I’m a very big food nut when it comes to new places, and I always like to ask locals where to get the best food around. I received many votes for Mao’s Kitchen located on Pacific Ave right next to the Bondi BBQ restaurant which was a very close second.

Anywho, this post isn’t necessarily about the food so much as the take-out menu and overall aesthetic of the restaurant. The place itself had a lot of Chinese influence, primarily propaganda type posters, large photos of Mao Zedong, former leader of the Communist party in China. Eating there almost gave you the sense that you were in an old Chinese restaurant, with their large wooden communal tables, no-frills wooden chairs, and the very authentic Chinese food (I recommend the Orange Ginger chicken and the Beef with Yams).

What most impressed me though was their take-out menus. Printed on a low-quality brown stock, it really made me feel like I was picking up a propaganda flyer for the Communist regime. The very stylized imagery, the black and red color scheme. If you’re Shepard Fairey fan you’ll know what I’m talkin about.

Anywho, hit the jump for a couple of photos that don’t do their menu any justice. Guess you’ll have to stop in for yourself!

Kogi’s Korean B-B-Q truck. Mexican/Korean fusion FTW!

April 27th, 2009 Posted in Random Musings | 5 Comments »

kogis_header

If you haven’t heard about the Kogi’s dinner truck then you need to wake the F#@! up!

This restaurant-on-wheels has taken it’s mexican/korean fusion food from the restaurant to the streets, and they’ve developed quite the following through it’s Twitter fanbase. With items such as korean short-rib tacos, kim chi quesadillas and kogi dogs, they have carved out a niche that few, if any, have even begun to fill. Enough with the ramblings, if you’d like to know more about the Kogi story, check out Mobo Media’s site for a couple of videos as well!

@mexicandude
, @theactualjoey, @shallowpaul, and our boy Eric decided to brave the crowd and police to try and get our hands on this elusive golden food. Long story short, after 3 hours, 1 location busted up by the cops, and a whole lotta standing, we finally got our food and let me tell you, as a half-Korean kid with a mean hankerin’ for bulgogi and kalbi, this was top-notch food.

Shout out to Roy (pictured above) for bringing such an awesome idea and great food out to the public and sharing his passion with the rest of us!

Hit the jump for the photos of the madness.

Project Munny Rorscach: Complete!

April 27th, 2009 Posted in Random Musings | No Comments »

dunny3_complete

Not much to say here that the headline doesn’t already say. After about 3-4 days of painting, plus 1 day of sketching, I’m finally completed with my first Munny! Pretty happy with the end result to my first stab at this type of project. The pinstriping could have been a bit more consistent, but overall, I was pleased with how the colors came out. I totally dig his hat, and his face came out pretty decently trying to jank-ify a way to cut out that piece for his face.

Next up: Project Munny Dr. Manhatten (easier?)

Hit the jump for a picture of how I created his head (read: with many pieces of tape and an exacto knife) as well as a full-body shot of this bad boy.
