So I was reading this awesome article about the process of designing a logo over on Freelanceswitch.com and it really got me thinking about the different ways of design that each person has.
Each process can be as unique as the logos that result from them. Are you a thinker? Doodler? Sketcher? Sketchbook or straight to the Computer? How much time do you like to spend before even putting pen(cil) to paper. All these and more after the jump!
All my projects really start out like a big block of granite. The way I handle each project depends on the size of the rock. My usual process usually stays the same with slight variations depending on if I’m “Feelin’ it”. To elaborate, I always start off by brainstorming words, phrases, images, colors, whatever comes to my head in relation to the company. This helps mainly to just clear my head of all the clutter and sift through what comes out. Sometimes these words or phrases develop into the visual image that I’m looking for.
In addition to brainstorming I also like to do the preliminary research about the client and his/her company. Target market? Industry? Message? All of these questions help me to start chipping away at the granite that will become the logo.
According to Angela Ferraro-Fanning over @ Freelancswtich.com, the preliminary sketching and wordplay is key:
” One of the biggest mistakes a designer can make is to go straight to the computer and start plugging away at logo designs. Sure you may be feeling inspired after a chat with your client, but without really thinking, you’ll just be wasting time.”
This is a bit of a split decision when it comes to the necessity of sketching. There have been many times when inspiration just hits, and I have to get it on the computer right there. Other times, it requires a more methodical approach.
I say there is no right or wrong approach. Every project is unique, as is every designer, and with them their own processes. We’ve all been equipped with certain tools and we are free to use those tools in a way that we deem best for us.
What do you do for your process? Do you have a certain habit or system that you find successful? I’d love to hear it!

Oh yeah, the design process is so different for everyone. Since we all tick in different ways, we are all creative differently too. It is quite interesting to see how people are so different in their creative minds. Thanks
Thanks for the feedback!
It is definetly a unique process. Curious as to what style you prefer?
