crawfish

Recently took a trip to Austin and Houston (wasn’t able to make it to SXSW though).

Some of the best things about traveling to different places is the change in culture. This is really evident to me in the food and the architecture of the cities I visit. Although I have not been to other countries (aside from Mexico), I believe the change in cultures would be even MORE prevalent in the foods and architecture as well.

Austin had one of the BEST buildings, I’ve seen in the OWL building as it’s nicknamed due to it’s likeness of an owl. In addition to that, the UT clocktower (infamous for the school shooting back in ’66) stands tall carrying both a sense of culture and pride as well as this sad nostalgia of what took place. I definitely enjoyed the blend of the modern with the vintage. New, steel framed modern buildings stand next to vintage brick-and-mortar buildings with their dilapidated signs. Eclectic artwork on city walls and packed city streets gave out a thick sense of culture. The people were great and the food was fantastic. If you ever go into Austin, definitely hit up Pluckersfor some ranch wings and fried pickels. Check out Mobomediainc.com to see what some of the locals had to say about Pluckers.

Read about Houston and see the pictures from the trip after the jump!

Houston is familiar territory for me, but I got to experience my first crawfish boil at Coaches Pub. The place was your standard pub, but the food was far from standard. They brought out a huge tub of crawfish and after a quick lesson in how to eat them, I dug in. Make sure to get some fries, or chips to offset the heat that will slowly build on your pallet from the seasoning. If you go to Houston and it’s not raining, make sure to catch a crawfish boil in one of their icehouses (an outdoor patio/bar). That right there is good eatin’ and good times. Check out Mobomediainc.com to see what Coaches Pub is like and a quick lesson in how to eat a crawfish!
